One of the major differences between gasonline and electric powered vehicles is the construction of the chassis. In a conventional car, placement of the fuel tank, engine and drivetrain dicates the construction of the chassis. These components present a major risk when comprised in an accident. In a Tesla the batteries and motors are places along the bottom of the car giving it a very low center of gravity. This adds a tremendous amount of stability to the chassis. The batteries reside inside of a strong aluminum structure, designed to survive an impact from any direction. The absense of fluids such as gasoline means that the risk of spilling fuel to catch fire has been eliminated.
